Our trip here from Lee Vining took us across our first 2 state crossings of this trip, into Nevada and back into California. Our trip took us over a couple of steep passes that I don't know how we could have avoided. The first, between Carson City and the East side of Lake Tahoe, wasn't too bad. The second, between Kings Beach (North Lake Tahoe) and Truckee, was single lane all the way and included some long 9% grades. My book on mountain grades mentioned the first but somehow omitted the second. Once again, our little Colorado acquitted itself nicely.
We had some errands to run when we got here so we didn't do much site seeing on the first afternoon. On our full day here, we visited some favorite spots around lake Tahoe.

There was one spot that we wanted to hit for lunch. There's a chain of restaurants that includes Kimo's (Maui), Duke's (Kauai, Maui, Oahu, Huntington Beach), Keoki's Paradise (Kauai), Hula Grill (Maui, Oahu) and Jake's (Del Mar). Over the years, we've hit all of their restaurants except for the Oahu ones (we don't get there much). A few years ago, we went to Jake's at Lake Tahoe only to learn that it had new owners. This trip, we planned on lunching at Sunnyside which is the restaurant that they opened up after they sold Jake's. Just our luck, Sunnyside doesn't serve lunch this time of year. The same was true of Jake's so we ended up at a very nice place next door to Jake's.
Took this last couple of pictures from the pier in front of that restaurant (and Jake's).
Addendum: After posting, I was out cooking on the BBQ when a huge pine cone fell near me. Looked around and they're all over the place. Considered putting on my bike helmet when I realized that I was in one of the few places that wasn't under a tree.

Um... Highway 89 has no such grades...
ReplyDeleteProbably would have been better than 267 but we had no. warning. Staying on 395 until 80 might also have been an option (just more miles). 89 does have tunnel under the tracks at the 80 end that would have stopped us in our tracks while we confirmed that we would fit. Googled it and it's 25' wide and the arch doesn't start until 13' up. It's tight but it looks tighter than it is.
