Stop 37: Klamath Falls, OR

First, a couple of shots from the morning walk that we took in Lakeview prior to packing up and leaving.

The entire area was swarming with rock chucks (also called yellow bellied marmots). This guy was keeping an eye on us.

We wanted to get a closer look at the Junipers Reservoir. This was as close as we got before a bull threatened to chase us off.
Klamath Falls is a 2 night stop that should have been a 1 night stop. There doesn't seem to be much to do here. The area is very arid when we expected trees. The falls no longer exist.

Early in the 20th century, they decided to tap the falls for electricity. They built a hydroelectric dam just below the falls and covered them up. Upper Klamath Lake was already the largest natural lake in Oregon. The reservoir is the same size (except for the new bit between the falls and the dam).

We explored what we could of the area and hiked the Link River Nature Trail. The Link River connects Upper Klamath Lake (reservoir) to Lake Ewauna which then feeds the Klamath River.

The Link River.

More of the Link River.

The entire Link River area is a nature preserve. In the winter, it's a major nesting area for bald eagles.

A small harbor at the south end of Upper Klamath Lake.
After lunch at a great brewpub, we headed back to the trailer.

Tomorrow, we're off for Seiad Valley, CA (along the Klamath River) where the temperatures are supposed to be in the 107° range.
